ROSACEA CAUSES
The recent research has determined five main causes of rosacea :
- Genetic predisposition. White-skinned people of European ancestry have more chances of developing the disease.
The majority of rosacea sufferers are women; men, though, can also be affected and tend to have more severe symptoms than women.
People of all ages are susceptible to this disorder, yet it is mostly widespread in the group of people over 30.
This disease is not contagious.
- Blood vessels abnormalities. If facial blood vessels are hypersensitive to a number of stimuli,
i.e sun exposure, extreme temperature change, etc., then they dilate much wider and more suddenly, and stay open much longer
than those blood vessels that function normally. Such phenomena result in redness, which over the time persists and may progress
into inflammation, pimples, and skin thickening.
- Some medications. Unfortunately, it’s not a rare occasion when along with rosacea, a patient also suffers from acne.
In such cases, it’s important to remember that certain medications used to treat acne, i.e. tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide and
isotretinoin, can actually relate to rosacea causes. Such popular wrinkle treatments as microdembrasion and chemical peels have been reported
to lead to the disease as well as the topical steroids prescribed for seborrheic dermatitis.
- Demodex mites. Two species of demodex mites – demodex follicolorum and demodex brevis - have been identified to
live on the face of humans. They are mostly found in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands which are connected to the follicles.
The mites are just 0.3mm long, so they can be spotted under a microscope only. Usually, they bring no harm.
But in some cases, the bacterium Bacillus oleronius living in the mites has been reported as one of rosacea causes.
People suffering from this disorder also tend to carry larger numbers of demodex mites on the face.
- The bacterium Heliobacter pylori is an acidophilic bacterium that can infect stomach and lead to ulcers and gastritis.
It has been reported that there might be a link between the bacterium and rosacea since eradication of H. pylori in the
ulcers patients has resulted in improvement of rosacea symptoms.
Besides the mentioned causes of rosacea, the patients should stay alert about triggers provoking the symptoms of this disease. They are divided into seven categories:
- Foods: dairy, chocolate, citrus fruits, vinegar, avocados, hot and spicy foods
- Beverages: hot tea, coffee or chocolate; alcoholic beverages
- Weather conditions: UV, strong wind, heat, cold
- Temperature conditions: extreme and sudden temperature change, hot bath, sauna
- Emotional conditions: anxiety, mental stress
- Physical conditions: strenuous exercise, body stress
