TOPICAL MEDICATIONS
Topical medications used to treat rosacea come in the form of gels, creams and solutions. At the beginning of treatment, you may experience such side-effects as skin dryness and irritation, which may be relieved with the help of a good water-based mosturizer and sunblock. If applied once or twice a day to the affected area, they produce anti-inflammatory effect and significally reduce papules and pustules. It may take up to 8 weeks for rosacea symptoms to improve.
The topical medications used to treat rosacea are mentioned below:
- Azelaic acid
is a natural acid found in wheat, rye, and barley. It is used in creams with such brand names as Azelex, Finacea, and Finevin and is beneficial for anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects.
- Benzoyl peroxide
is a chemical with anti-microbial properties.
- Clindamycin
is a topical antibiotic used to treat pustules.
- Erythromycin
is a topical or oral antibiotic used for anti-microbial effect.
- Metronidazole
is an antibiotic used in gels or creams that come under the brand names of Rozex and MetroGel.
- Sulfacetamide
is an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties.
- Sulfur lotions
are used to peel off the skin and get rid of excess oil and dirt.
